
The Chappaquiddick Island Association (CIA) will host another webinar in The Chappy Barrier Beach Education Series to underscore the importance of those beaches and to help all of us make better decisions about their future.
This second session, Chappy Barrier Beaches: Formation, Migration and Evolution, will take place on Thursday, May 29 from 5-6pm and feature a distinguished panel of scientists and local officials:
- Andrew Ashton – Assoc. Scientist, Coastal Systems Group, Woods Hole Institute;
- Cornelia Dean – Author or “Against the Tide,” former NY Times Science Editor, Instructor at Brown University and Chappy resident;
- Stephen McKenna – Coastal Zone Mgmnt., Cape Cod & Island Regional Coordinator;
- Rob Morrison – Shellfish Constable, Edgartown;
- Dr. Sarah Oktay – Exec. Dir. of Herring Gut Coastal Science Center;
- Elizabeth Pendleton – Geologist, US Geological Survey, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center;
- Kara Shemeth – Conservation Assistant, Edgartown; and
- JP Walsh – Professor of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island.
The session will include presentations on how barrier islands are formed, barrier island migration, sources of sand, shoaling offshore and sand migration, and the impact of storms, sea level rise, climate change, erosion, and human activities. Q&A will follow.
